Marrakesh, Magic City |
|
Located at the centre of Morocco, this imperial city, called the “Pearl of the South”, is set up in a large palm grove. Founded in 1062 by Almoravides, the city thrived in XVI century under the Saadiens dynasty; it is an important commercial metropolis today. It has nearly 800.000 inhabitants and is considered as the tourist capital of the kingdom of Morocco. Protected by its impressive strengthened wall, Marrakesh is an attractive architectural unit with awe-inspiring mosques and wonderful palaces which offer the traveler the opportunity to be carried away through an unforgettable bewitchment. The Minaret of Koutoubia, the El Badii Palace, the Bahia Palace, the Ben Youssef Madrassa, the Saadian Tombs, the Museum of Marrakesh, the Koubba of Almoravides are a sample of the marvellous places which will give you the opportunity to discover a little more the mysteries of this amazing Orient. The famous Jemaa el Fna Square and its crowd, in the day and at night, is the heart of the city. The medina’s narrow streets, colored and noisy souks and diverse small trades and crafts shops represent the city’s richest treasures and cherished pride. Jemaa el Fna is also the site of ongoing public performances of storytellers, fortune tellers, game shows, snake charmers and food stalls, a diverse and compelling cultural mosaic which makes of the Square a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other wonders of this «ochre city» are the Menara, the Majorelle Garden and other parks and gardens wich seem to grow in defiance of the arid climate of the desert. To understand and appreciate Marrakesh, it is necessary to spend some time there. Only then will this imperial city appear as a jewel surrounded by the High Atlas Mountains. |
